About the Library
RESOURCES
Situated on the grounds of the Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, the A.F. Parlow Library of Health Sciences is open to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center employees. The library contains a large biomedical collection of 8,000 e-books, 700 current journals, 2,700 online journals and online databases. The library building also houses an auditorium with seating for over 150 and three conference rooms.
The Library's web page allows users to access electronic resources, the library catalog, and submit Medline/PubMed literature searches, and other inquiries. Some of the excellent electronic resources available include ClinicalKey, UpToDate, Stat!Ref, and CINAHL.

Services
ACCESS TO ONLINE RESOURCES
Only LAC Harbor-UCLA Medical Center personnel are eligible for a Parlow Library online account. The online library account provides full-text access to publications in our digital collection as well as access to the databases Parlow subscribes to. Fill out the Application for Access to Online Resources for an account.
LIBRARY CARDS
Library cards are issued to all employees of LAC Harbor-UCLA Medical Center including medical students, interns, residents, fellows, faculty, nurses and allied health professionals. Library cards are processed from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday - Friday.
REFERENCE SERVICES
The Reference Department conducts MEDLINE/PubMed literature searches for LAC Harbor-UCLA Medical Center personnel. Reference questions may be submitted in person, over the phone, or via email. Tours and library-use training are given individually or in groups. Group tours are offered by appointment. Internet access is available to LAC Harbor-UCLA Medical Center personnel for research purposes.
INTERLIBRARY LOAN
The Reference Department will process requests for books or articles not held at the Parlow Library. We participate in the National Library of Medicine's Docline lending program with member libraries in the University of California system.

How do I get an account to access the library's online resources?
Please submit Application for Access to Online Resources form to obtain an username and password for access to the library's online resources.
What can the Reference Librarians do for me?
The Reference Department conducts MEDLINE/PubMed literature searches for LAC Harbor-UCLA Medical Center personnel. Reference librarians will also send you the PDF of articles you are unable to retrieve. Reference questions may be submitted in person, over the phone or via email. Tours and library-use training are given individually or in groups. Group tours are offered by appointment. Internet access is available to LAC Harbor-UCLA Medical Center personnel.
How do I use PubMed with access to the Parlow Library online full text resources?
Use this link Search PubMed or the PubMed icon to search for listings to medical articles. To get access to the library's online full text resources, click on the Parlow Library Full Text logo located on the right of the abstract page.
How do I use online books and journals?
Click on the appropriately-labeled tab located on the Parlow Library website.
Who is permitted to check out library materials?
In order to borrow items from the Parlow Library you will need to apply for a library card. All employees of LAC Harbor-UCLA Medical Center including medical students, interns, residents, fellows, faculty, nurses, and allied health professionals are qualified to receive a Parlow Library card.
How do I obtain a library card?
Visit the Parlow Library circulation desk Monday - Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
How do I find out what journals the Parlow Library holds?

How long can I keep the items I have checked out?
- Bound journals - may be checked out overnight
- Unbound journals - do not circulate
- Reserve books - circulate for 3 days
- 7 day books - circulate for 7 days
- General collection books - circulate for 14 days
- Reference books - do not circulate
- Audiovisual equipment - may be checked to LAC Harbor UCLA Medical Center faculty and staff with 72 hours notice. This equipment is for use on campus only at approved locations. A valid libray card is required for borrowing any equipment. Please email parlowlibraryAV@gmail.com for reservations and further information.
What if I need to keep the items I have checked out beyond their due date?
Most library materials may be renewed providing there is no hold on the item. A maximum of two renewals is permitted on most items. Journals and reserve books may not be renewed. Visit or call the library at ext 66100 and provide your library card number and the bar code number of the borrowed item in order to renew your loan.
Where are the journals shelved?
All journals (including recent issues and bound journals) are located on the first floor of Parlow Library.

The Reference and Reserve collections as well as the General collection are shelved on the first floor of the Parlow Library.
Who should I contact for library orientation?
Library orientation is available by appointment with the Reference Department at ext 66100.
Who is allowed to use the computers in the Parlow Library?
The computers in the Parlow Library are reserved for LAC Harbor UCLA Medical Center employees only for research purposes. Accessing gambling and adult-only sites is strictly prohibited.
Can I use the computers to type Word, Excel or PowerPoint documents?
LAC Harbor UCLA Medical Center employees are free to use the computers which are equipped with word processing software.
How do I submit a request for an article or book not held at the Parlow Library?
The Reference Department will process requests for articles and books not held at the Parlow Library for LAC Harbor UCLA Medical Center staff. Please email us with your request at libref@harbor-ucla.org or call us at ext 66100.
Can I borrow a laptop computer or overhead projector from the Parlow Library?
The laptop computers and projectors are available to LAC Harbor UCLA Medical Center faculty and staff with 72 hours notice. This equipment is for use on campus only at approved locations . A valid library card is required for borrowing any equipment. Please email HUCLAParlowLibraryAV@dhs.lacounty.gov for reservations and further information.
